Famous Irish Authors Visiting Minnesota: Lord Dunsany, Nov 18

2pm in the EML. This event is part of our Fall Colloquium Series: Free lectures held in the Eoin McKiernan Library.

Presented by Patrick O'Donnell, Director of Education, Celtic Junction Arts Center.

The great pioneering Anglo-Irish author of twentieth century cosmic fantasy fiction, Lord Dunsany (1878-1957), visited Minnesota on a lecture tour in 1919. Celebrated for his inspirational influence on authors as varied as H. P. Lovecraft and J.R.R. Tolkien, and writing in a variety of genres over five decades, Dunsany is arguably the founding "grandfather" of speculative imaginative fiction. What is beyond dispute is that he is easily one of the most extraordinary - and little known - geniuses in the Irish Literary Renaissance.

Patrick is a literary historian and English faculty member at Normandale Community College. His research occasionally encompasses 'lost' or little understood Irish authors and innovators with Minnesota connections (such as Sir Tyrone Guthrie). This lecture will discuss Dunsany's biography, historical context, imaginative brilliance, and influence.
