Digging in Haunted Ground: Learn to write your Mystery Tale, Oct 18-Nov 22
Cost: $160. Tuesdays 7-9 pm at Celtic Junction. October 18 - November 22 (6 evenings). Email the instructor directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
This six-week Celtic Collaborative class will explore key elements in writing a multi-layered, atmospheric mystery story. Students will read and analyze instructor Erin Hart’s first novel, Haunted Ground, and learn about that novel’s unusual origin and development. The class will kick off with a general discussion about classic mystery themes and subgenres, and practical nuts and bolts elements of mystery writing. Throughout the six weeks, this class will offer a combination of lecture, discussion and writing practice; students will also spend some class time working on their own mystery stories, using specific techniques they are learning from Haunted Ground: crafting memorable characters and dialogue, creating a strong sense of place, constructing an intricate plot, building suspense, and layering in ideas and images that will resonate with readers. Erin Hart, author of Haunted Ground, will be our instructor. The class will culminate with a celebratory reading of our work in progress!
Few writers combine as seamlessly as Hart does the subtlety, lyrical language, and melancholy of literary fiction with the pulse-pounding suspense of the best thrillers. -Booklist
